How cancer-causing bacteria reached the South Seas in outrigger canoes

The bacterium Helicobacter pylori causes gastric ulcers and gastric cancer. The prehistoric great migrations of human populations, including the expansion of the Austronesians across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, can be reconstructed in precise detail from the genetic makeup of different Helicobacter strains.

Financial support for ILM

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs has granted the Institute of Laser Technology in Medicine and Metrology (ILM) in Ulm additional financial support totalling 582,000 euros from the German government’s “Future Investment Programme”. The funding is to be used to renew and expand the institute’s equipment in 2010. The institute is characterised by its unique combination of technical and physical skills in the field of laser technology as well as its skills in medical and clinical application.

EU Project

Parameters that help advance biogas

There is a binding EU-wide target to source 20 per cent of each country’s energy needs, as stipulated in the Kyoto Protocol, from renewable sources by 2020. The EU research project SEBE (Sustainable and Innovative European Biogas Environment) is investigating the conditions that are required to push biogas technology forward. One of the 14 SEBE partners is the Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Solid Waste Management (ISWA) at the University of Stuttgart.
